French Open Round 2 Review

Two days more and the second round is over. Unlike the first there were alot less surprises so this is moreso just a reaffirmation of how well the seeds have done.

Tomic Tumbles

Australian hothead has-been Bernard Tomic was eliminated in four sets today by Borna Coric. To this day his peak performance is still a quarterfinal appearance at Wimbledon five years ago so I was delighted to hear he lost. You may also remember his recent comments about not caring that he hasn’t tried hard enough because he’s already worth so much.

Spanish Dominance

It wasn’t just Nadal this time. Nine of eleven spanish players appearing in the second round won their matches, most significantly David Ferrer, Rafael Nadal, Feliciano Lopez, and Garbine Muguruza. You gotta expect this as they always dominate the red clay.

Williams Doesn’t Wilter

Grand slam champs Venus and Serena both won quickly, but more surprising was how quickly Venus won and how well she dominated her up and coming opponent Louisa Chirico. The elder sister had been having an up and down year, either losing early on or winning her sole tournament of the season so far at the Taiwan Open. Regardless, both had convincing 6-2 6-1 victories.

Young Generation

American tennis just hasn’t yielded any great players since both Williams sisters and Andy Roddick came to the forefront, so this is welcome news. Jack Sock, Sloane Stephens, Madison Keys, and Shelby Rogers, all 23 and under, advanced to the next round each in straight sets.

The French Family

It’s never good seeing the home crowd not do so well. Only four french men and three french women remain in their draw. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the highest ranked of them, lost his first two sets in today’s match so that would have been upset city there.

Aside from the listings above there isn’t much to say. Everything went mostly as planned and few top seeds lost. Best of luck to the players in round three.

French Open Round 1 Review

french open

Throw out all my predictions cuz it’s time for the results. As of this writing a couple round 1 matches are still going on but none featuring any major players. So much has happened and they were lucky to get most of it done after rain postponed most of monday’s matches.

Top Women’s Seeds Fall

High profile women had a tough go. 3rd seed Angelique Kerber lost in 3 sets. 5th seed Victoria Azarenka retired in the 3rd set of her match because of injury. 7th seed and recent US Open finalist Roberta Vinci also fell in two sets. I expected all to go far because of their status as established players but the two former Australian Open champions just couldn’t pull through.

Murray and Wawrinka Survive Upsets

Both guys were pushed to their limits, needing 5 sets to win and with Murray having to play over two days because his match ran into the night. Wawrinka had to beat Rosol, who he just beat in another clay court final over the weekend.

Williams Sisters Move On

They just keep playing on and time hasn’t stopped them. Both players won in two sets today but Venus had the much tougher go as she needed to win both sets in tiebreaks.

Italy Sent Packing

It was a really tough go for the country who gave us pizza. Former French Open finalist Sara Errani was beaten in two sets after making the quarterfinals the past two years. The aforementioned Vinci, former doubles partner of Errani, also lost.2010 winner Francesca Schiavone lost in two. Fabio Fognini and Andreas Seppi were beaten in three sets.

“King Of Clay” Back In Form

Rafael Nadal made quick work of serving giant Sam Groth, losing only one game in each set. It should be noted Nadal had trouble against a similar big server in John Isner a while back in the 1st round of this tournament, instead needing 5 sets to beat him back then.

Former Champions

With the absence of 2012 and 2014 winner Maria Sharapova, the only remaining champs in the women’s draw were Schiavone, Serena, Ana Ivanovic, and Svetlana Kuznetsova, with all but the first winning. On the men’s side once again both Nadal and Wawrinka won their matches, with ’09 champion Federer withdrawing before the tournament started because of a back injury.

AustraliDouches Win

Infamous young brats Nick Kyrgios and Bernard Tomic sadly both won. (I only hate them because they act like the best when they haven’t even achieved much. Stay humble bros.)

There you go. My summary of the 1st round of the French Open. Stay tuned for Round 2.
