Hurricane Matthew Playlist

Bear down and protect yourselves!!! It’s time for another hurricane in Florida. This is my first one as recently I’ve moved here from Chicago. And nothing gets me through storms easier than music (and booze). This is what you should thematically be listening to.

The title says it all. No other reason.

I had to again after my one post of its release. I mean, consider the illusion the path meteorologists say it’ll take, until it veers off course and hits you directly. Idk. It makes sense to me.

Many people love hurricanes, many people don’t. But nothing’s more annoying than preparing for something , in this case stocking up on food and water, and never needing it. You wasted your time and money. So this shit better at least cause a slight power outage so I can eat the food.

The title says it here too. What are you really gonna be doing when the lights go out? Checkers? Hide and seek? Nah. Get jiggy with it, or whatever these Brits say.

So you see my late 90’s-early 00’s bias, right? Consider this the “after” song. But no, Matthew, do not hit me one more time. Go dissipate in the ocean.

Kinda the symbolic “fuck you, we hate this destruction you bring” song. I don’t wanna deal with the cleanup.

So why am I not evacuating? What am I doing hangin’ ’round? Bad idea, I know. Death is knocking at my door, and yes that’s a huge exaggeration.

Not all of these truly fit a hurricane setting but they’re all damn good regardless. Stay safe out there folks, as I’ll try too.

Super Bowl 51 Halftime Show

FINALLY!!! It’s something I’ve been begging for for years. As yet another big middle finger to the hypermasculinity of football, Lady Gaga is set to perform the halftime show in this season’s Super Bowl. You may remember she had already sung the national anthem at this past Super Bowl, but this is the real deal. It comes after two years of other such high profile events: her duets album with Tony Bennett, multiple awards show performances, the aforementioned national anthem, appearing in American Horror Story, and now this.

Gaga is another in a string of recent acts like Katy Perry and Beyonce, twice really for the latter, that you’d think no typical football fan likes. But they are all beloved by many and fitting for the show. There’s just so much she can do with this though. Will it be a medley of old tracks? Mostly stuff from the soon-to-be-released new album? Likely it’s going to be both. I mean you don’t go to a Britney Spears show in Vegas just to see everything from her cd Glory, right? No.

If you had to ask me, her best cd was by far The Fame Monster, the EP deluxe addition to her first album The Fame, so that’s the stuff I want to see. Though since it will more than likely be a complete medley, I say start out with an opening of Bad Romance, transition into Paparazzi or Poker Face, something from her next album Joanne, and end it with The Edge Of Glory or Applause. The great thing about Gaga used to be that you don’t know what to expect with her though. You can never forget the meat dress, her male alter ego Jo Calderone, or arriving on the red carpet in a giant egg. That stuff is classic her and nobody can ever match that level of randomness and artistry, aside from David Bowie of course. There’s been no details about the setlist or what will go on, so it’s all up in the air.

Regardless of what goes down, this will be the spectacle of 2017. There is nobody like Mother Monster. Long live the queen!

Gaga’s Back In A Perfect Illusion

Yes!!!! Mother Monster is back finally. It’s nearing three years since Artpop and two since Cheek To Cheek with Tony Bennett, and so much has gone on since then. She starred in last year’s season of American Horror Story, also in the upcoming season too. She sang the national anthem in this year’s Super Bowl. One can’t forget her performances at nearly every major awards show either.

So we come to Perfect Illusion now. It’s a fantastic piece of haunting power pop tinged with rock instrumentation and vocals. The sound is virtually nothing like anything she’s done before, most similar to You & I from her album Born This Way in the rock sound. Gaga, or really Stefani Germanotta, wrote this about a relationship that goes sour, but who knows if it’s personal yet. Her vocals so well match the runs littered throughout, almost like she’s crying but in a powerful way.

I’m going to give this a solid 8.5/10, but it’s growing on me the more I listen to it so that’ll be a 9 easy by the morning.

#ThrowbackThursday with A*TEENS

Epic choreography, ABBA covers, and photogenic teens? Yeah sure why not. That’s exactly what these guys were for a solid five or six years in Sweden. They made their way to America through Disney radio and for a while, kids couldn’t get enough of it. We all remember the Lilo & Stitch music video for Can’t Help Falling In Love, right? Yeah that was these guys. I didn’t even discover them really until around 2011 and became obsessed for a solid three years. Bandmembers have resisted a reunion since they broke up, which like NSYNC it started out as a hiatus. I’ll always have hope for the future.

Top 5 TV Show Bands

Music and television are two things we hold close to our hearts. So of course you have to combine the two. Many bands have had tv shows made for them, more recently this type is a reality tv, but many other bands were created for tv shows, often showing a fictionalized version of who they are in real life but still sharing the music they use. These are your top five tv show bands.

#5 2Gether

Created to parody the real life boy band mania that had been going on, 2Gether intentionally picked five guys who fit the most popular personalities of the usual boy band. Most of their songs were meant to be jokes parodying those of real life boy bands too.

#4 O-Town

Also created in response to the popular boy band craze of the 90’s, O-Town was the first to come from the successful Making The Band franchise that chronicled how the search to find its members and their daily progress when they came to be. The band lasted a decent three years and two albums but recently reunited in the past few years to record a new album, sans original member Ashley Parker Angel.

#3 Big Time Rush

These guys are by far my favorite on the list considering I actually grew up loving the show. They were pretty much a new version of the Monkees. Their existence transcended into the real world like all the other bands mentioned and in their show they referenced the second “british invasion” of One Direction being popular too, but also the typical boy band trend of breaking up after three albums and only one guy continuing to a solo career. Plus, Carlos ends up dating Alexa Vega from Spy Kids so that’s always cool.

#2 S Club 7

Ain’t no part like an S Club Party, eh? They were the massively popularBritish group back in my toddler days, but I didn’t even hear about them until Pandora played one of their songs, which led to me finding out about the show. Unlike the previous three groups, they ended up having an actual movie in theaters. Sadly they also broke up soon after the movie, by that time only six members remained anyway. Like so many other british bands of the late 90’s and early 00’s, nostalgia hit and they reunited in 2014, with a countrywide tour in 2015.

#1 The Monkees

Did you really expect anyone else? Come on. They were the original tv band. Formed in 1966, their show lasted for two season and got cancelled because of creative differences between the group and the television studio they worked for. They too went on to make a movie after the tv show ended but that was the beginning of their downfall. Peter Tork quit in late 1968, and Mike Nesmith was the next to go.The group disbanded in 1971. In the 80’s they had a huge revival in popularity and released another new album, doing that again in 1997, and now fifty years after the show first aired in 2016 too. Sadly, member Davy Jones passed away in 2012. R.I.P. man.

Until next time, it’s been great. Jam on folks!!!

“Wow”, Beck at it again…

Remember the guy who won best album over everyone at the 2015 Grammys? The guy no one knew until they found out he is the artist that sang the 90’s hit song “Loser”.  Well come to find out, the dude is super talented and can play a bunch of instruments and  is not too bad. He has a new song called, “Wow” that just released and a new album on the way. The single is like indie rock mixed with psychedelic rap.

2016 Billboard Music Awards: Hit or Miss?

The 2016 Billboard Music Awards (BBMAs) premiered on Sunday, May 22nd. I am not a huge fan of award shows due to the fake smiles stars put on, dumb promos forced throughout the three hour event, and untalented artists who end up winning the award. I decided to do a hit or miss for some of the top talked about things at the show.

Hit #1: Twenty One Pilots win Billboard Music Awards for Best Rock Album and Group. They are personally my favorite band and for a group who has just now came into mainstream music, after many years and hard work, this brings a smile to a long time fan’s blurryFACE.

Miss #1: Meek Mill wins best Rap album over Kendrick Lamar’s Grammy winning album, To Pimp A Butterfly and Drake’s two albums that he put out last year. Though many believe Kendrick should have had the honors, I believe Drake’s If You’re Reading This It’s Too late was the best rap album of the year. I know one thing for sure the OVO boys are probably cooking up some more music to prove who is truly the best.

Hit #2 Finally an artist who deserved to win, won. Weeknd has shown and proved to everyone what it takes to be a talented artist that is worthy of an award at a show. He took home 8 out of 19 nominated awards last night, the most from any male artist at a BBMA show. The trophies included Top Hot 100 artist and top radio songs.

Miss #2: Prince Tribute. I understand that Stevie Wonder and Madonna are two of the oldest, but greatest artist of our generation and that is a huge reason they were chosen to do a cover, but I just expected a little bit more. It was not terrible. But vocally I believe it could have been done just a little bit better and more creatively. It has mixed reviews though. I just expected more for a artist who has changed the music scene for everyone.

Hit #3: Rihanna’s performance of Love on the Brain & Kesha’s cover of Bob Dylan’s It Ain’t Me Babe. For Rihanna it was a nice change not to hear her song Work for a change. Love on the Brain was a standout song on her newest album ANTI that shows off her incredible vocal range. Kesha has been in quite the legal battle with accused Rapist and producer Dr. Luke. After finally granting her the ability to perform she sang her heart out.

Miss #3: Not a huge Country fan, but Sam Hunt’s Take Your Time should have won best Country song over any of the other ones (Winner: Die A Happy Man; Thomas Rhett). Hunt is the coolest Hipster redneck singer out; give him an award for me actually tolerating a country song.

Hit #4: We will end on a hit. My dude Justin Bieber kept everyone “Company” with his performance. He also accepted best male artist. Rightfully so in my opinion. His last album Purpose is non stop on the radio and has gone platinum a bunch of times, his concerts/ performances have sold out because of the amazing sets and choreography, and he is just doing everything right to get everyone’s approval even though he sometimes doesn’t want it. He posted a lengthy caption on a picture on instagram explaining why he hates awards shows. Me too Justin, me too.
