French Open Women’s Final Review

serena and garbine

It went exactly how i expected sadly, aand thus we have a new first-time grand slam champion. Garbine Muguruza beat Serena Williams 7-5 6-4. Serena has now been upset three tournaments in a row and failed to match Steffi Graf’s open era record of 22 grand slams. Muguruza is the third first time grand slam champion in a row after Flavia Pennetta won the 2015 US Open and retired right after, followed by Angelique Kerber winning the Australian Open this year.

Both ladies traded breaks towards the end of the first set. Muguruza first went up 4-2, and then Serena broke back and went up 5-4, with her opponent then holding serve and breaking to win the set 7-5. The second set was a tad more straight forward, where Muguruza broke to go up 3-1 and they both held service games there on until she won 6-4 and thus the match.

Alot of credit goes to Garbine here for her game, her rising talent at still a young age, and taking advantage of Serena’s “ish” day, but it was again Serena’s match to win or lose. She was attempting to match Steffi Graf’s grand slam record and failed. Playing four days in a row obviouslt didn’t help her fitness level or any such injuries related to that. Sadly these upsets of her in the biggest tournaments are becoming more frequent and you have to wonder how much longer she’ll be #1 in the world or if she’ll win another major. As for now, we just have to enjoy what we have left of her glorious career.
