French Open Semifinals Review

french open

Pardon me for the repeat, but no rain delays!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hell yeah. Today both the men and women competed in their semifinals because of weather related time crunches earlier in the tournament. The women’s final is tomorrow and the men’s one Sunday.

2 Andy Murray vs. 3 Stan Wawrinka

Murray emerged victorious today over the defending champ, winning 6-4 6-2 4-6 6-2 and moving onto his first French Open final. It wasn’t until last year that Murray made it to even the finals of a lower tier clay court tournament so under the wing of now-former coach Amelie Mauresmo he really became a much more well-rounded player. Wawrinka after this loss is likely to drop down to at least 5th in the world rankings.

1 Novak Djokovic vs. 13 Dominic Thiem

Take a guess who won. Yup, thought so. Djokovic emerged victorious in an easy defeat of Thiem 6-2 6-1 6-4.  Both guys had played yesterday so maybe Thiem wasn’t in the best of fitness yet. He in fact has never made it this far in a grand slam, and in my earlier prediction piece I had him making it to the 4th round at best so he far exceeded anyone’s expectations for a young gun already exceptional on clay.

My prediction for the men’s final? Djokovic over Murray in 4 sets to win his first French Open and finally complete the “grand slam”. (winning all four majors.

1 Serena Williams vs. Kiki Bertens

I was legitimately surprised Serena actually won this one 7-6 6-4 after she said she had a slight cold or something in her previous match. Bertens had been on a rampage all tournament, beating four seeds on her way to the semis. Serena had played three days in a row so I’m expecting she’ll need a lot of rest before the final.

4 Garbine Muguruza vs. 21 Sam Stosur

I really had no idea who would win this before seeing the results. Muguruza had made the quarters the past two years and the Wimbledon finals last year. Stosur had made the semis twice before, the finals in 2010, won the US Open, and was early on in her career an exceptional doubles player but the past few years struggled to do well. Nonetheless, Muguruza handily won 6-2 6-4 and goes on to her first final  here.

Prediction for the finals tomorrow? Muguruza in three sets. Serena has the power but this will be her fourth match in as many days so she won’t have much energy left. Muguruza will get her first grand slam.
